Matt Povey: Lac Du Der 50-Pounder!

The story behind Matt Povey’s recent trip to French carp fishery Lac Du Der where he and some friends managed to catch a string of specimen carp to over the 50lb barrier…

Matt says…

We arrived on the Friday after quite a few issues with our transportation and journey etc but finally we had a week to make the most of our swim in 12,500 acres of water.

Fishing to an island reedbed at 100 yards range between the two of us, we managed 4 carp to 50lb 8oz.

My friend managed a 40lb common and a 29lb common in the first night and after a reshuffle of the rods, I had my first bite the next morning but unfortunately lost a big mirror at the net! Gutted!

Shortly after though, I was rewarded with a 36lb mirror and to say mirrors are rare in Lac Du Der is an understatement so I was absolutely over the moon.

The next day I received a fast take and was towed around in my boat for 30 minutes before slipping a 71lb catfish into the net. Not my cup of tea but an impressive fish by all accounts!

The weather then took a turn against us making the fishing difficult for a few days but as it turned back in our favour, I received a bite on the second from last night and managed to land a stunning 50lb 8oz common.

All in all a complete success for us both with the magnitude of the challenge being so great.

Monster Tiger Nut snowman rigs were the winning method for the week fished on blowback rigs with Size 2 boilie beak hooks and 25lb combi-soft hook links.

These were fished over Monster Tiger Nut freebies and Tiger Nuts all coated in the Sweet Tiger Liquid Carp Food.
