It was a difficult decision to select our 2021/22 SAS Competition winner with so many good entries and some fantastic regular contributors such as Joel Simmons and Gavin Nelson to name a few. In the end Jake just edged it from the rest. Like Mick, Craig and James our previous winners, Jake’s consistency and quality of photographs as well as his detailed reports were too hard to ignore when making the decision.

Jake’s bid

Despite sending in several captures since we began our competition Jake really kick started his attempt at winning it in August with the capture of the 30lb 2oz mirror known as ‘Black Eye’ on his trusty CompleX-T. This fish won him a monthly bait prize, his first of the season.

After struggling to locate the fish, Jake decided to start to regularly introduce bait into some of the more unknown swims on Northey Park Fishery. Opting to fish a swim known as “The Cut” which had not seen a single angler all year, he chose to op for his trusty setup consisting of a simple spinner rig, super sharp hook and of course a 15mm Hit N Run White pop up. Adding to this he introduced a scattering of 15mm CompleX-T baits around his rig to trigger a feeding response. He was quickly rewarded the following morning by a small 15lb stocky which was quickly released and the rod repositioned which then resulted in one of his target fish from the water!

He was soon following this up with a second place bait voucher prize in September with Northey Park’s ‘No Name Lin’ at 31lb 7oz. Again loving the CompleX-T.

Opting for a slightly different approach Jake this time decided to fish a large shallow gravel area in the lake after seeing fish regularly visiting it when walking the lake during the evening’s. During these walks he would introduce around 75-100 15mm CompleX-T baits to build the confidence of fish and ensure the spot was cleaned off ready for his session’s. Having arrived to the lake late after work and the light failing rapidly he managed to position two rods on the prebaited spot with a match the hatch 15mm CompleX-T Food Bait Pop Up to ensure perfect presentation. Being a morning bite type venue the next day at 7am Jake was rewarded with a very sought fish and one that is a real stunner!

Jake returned to Northey Park and sent in a report of the capture of the venue’s ‘Early Riser’ at a plump 38lb. This again earnt him another bait prize in October and put him well on the path to be considered as our season’s champion.

This fish was taken again on the pre baited shallow gravel spot and all of Jakes persistence and dedication had paid off. This fish however gave him a fight to remember taking him through 3 different weed beds and requiring a very careful hand line netting in the pitch black. Once the fish was in the net along with an entire weed bed he quickly removed as much weed as possible revealing a stunning mirror of incredible proportions. As far as night time photos go, we agree it’s a great effort and certainly one to remember.

Jake has had a very successful couple of years securing some amazing fish in his album both large and small. He also has a very exciting year ahead with his sights very firmly set on adding Northey Parks largest resident known as Cannon to his album along with some new tickets which we are sure he will soon get his teeth into and be putting his bait prize into action with.

Jake’s Comment:

“I am massively grateful for being selected as Dynamite’s 2021/22 SAS Winner and I am really looking forward to joining the team. My general approach to my fishing is firstly to enjoy it, and secondly to use my eyes and put 100% into every trip. Being a family guy with a wife and two children, my time is limited and its for this reason I prepare for my sessions by both by doing my homework on the lakes and also pre baiting spots etc. to ensure I have the best chance possible. As we all know every session if different and I always try to keep an open mind to my approach even if I have been baiting spots during the run up to it.”
