New Bait, New PB! – Monster Success on the Monster Tiger Nut.

By Adam Garland @adam_garland33

There’s no better confidence builder than catching during your first session out with a new bait. Well, that’s exactly what Adam Garland did the first time he went out with our Monster Tiger Nut, only it wasn’t just any fish…

I think it’s fair to say that at times in recent years, my Northants syndicate has been less than fair to me and although last year saw my best return for my efforts to date, it was evident that the known target fish avoided me. This year has been a completely different story. As we enter May, only four weeks into my yearly campaign, I have been lucky enough to have caught three off of my most wanted lists.

With the bank holiday due to start and with anticipation that my results could continue, I made plans to get on the road to the lake for 3pm and was soon on the way.

In a strange turn of events, I had so far, only fished the one swim and although successful, it was in the back of my mind that I may not be in the right area to tag one of the ‘A team’. On the way to the lake, I spoke to a Friend who said there was a south westerly wind and a drop in pressure, I couldn’t help but think that I would soon be sat in my favourite swim again.

Pulling in through the gate, I was going through the motions in my head and deciding how I would approach the situation, my plan was to get into a swim that gave me options and settle before the crowds arrived. As it happens another angler also had the same idea and was just moving into the swim, so a rethink was on the cards, I started to turn my attention to the narrow end of the lake. The narrow arm is shallower with plenty of snags, I thought that this area could be worth a go for the evening with the intention of moving in the morning as the other angler was only doing the one night.

A quick check in the bay and a few minutes in, the tree revealed that there were carp in the area and one particular fish got my attention as it was considerably larger than anything else. Not wanting to waste any time, I set about positioning three rigs on the far margin with Monster tiger nut food bait pop ups attached.

Bait wise, I was aware that the carp were passing over the area and I wanted to do all I could to encourage them to drop down and feed, so I put together a mix of Frenzied hemp, tigers and Monster tiger nut baits in mixed sizes, all covered in Sweet tiger cream pie liquid food. The idea was that the presence of the liquid food would cloud the water and encourage anything passing to investigate further.

The night passed by without any action and not a single sign that there were carp in the area. This all changed at 7am when the right rod burst into life and had me clinging on to prevent the culprit from making off to the snags. Once under control the fight was deliberate and every movement could be felt through the braided mainline, with each kick feeling it could be lost, but I need not of worried as the Size 4 Carp spirit round curve stayed firm and after several failed attempts to net her, she was soon in the bottom of the net.

The lake has around 25 originals and all of them are known by both name and appearance, so as soon as I turned her over it was clear I was staring at the Golden Common and she looked big.

A quick five minutes to calm myself and prepare the camera and carp care, she was soon up on the scales registering a weight of 44lbs 13oz, a new PB common and a great weight for the Golden, but also a huge confidence boost having just switched over to the Dynamite boilie range.

A New PB – The Golden Common, 44lbs 13oz.

There’s no buzz like the feeling of holding one of your targets, and I couldn’t be happier to have finally had my moment with the Golden Common.

I still moved swims as planned and although I did manage a lovely 31lbs 13oz common, things turned in an instant as the carp started to show signs of spawning, so my spring campaign was brought to an abrupt end with the focus now on returning in the summer to complete the ‘A team’.
